Recover failed subscription payments with Churn Buster

Churn Buster is a revenue recovery and retention layer for subscription brands. Connected to Awtomic, it recovers failed subscription payments with automated email campaigns, and can run branded cancel flows that present save offers when a customer goes to cancel.

Why merchants add Churn Buster to Awtomic

Churn Buster sends a sequence of different messages alongside failed payment attempts, each timed to a stage of the recovery window.
On Awtomic, Churn Buster manages the payment retries and the messaging together, so you can measure and optimize your campaign as one system.
Recovery emails go out on dedicated transactional infrastructure, authenticated with your own domain.

How it works

When a subscription payment fails, Awtomic notifies Churn Buster and a recovery campaign opens for that customer. Churn Buster schedules payment retries and a sequence of emails (and optional SMS) across the recovery window. When a payment succeeds, the campaign closes automatically. If every retry fails, Awtomic moves the subscription to Failed status at the end of the campaign.

After accepting the invitation to your new account, connect to Awtomic here.

Then adjust two settings in Awtomic:

Failed Payment emails. Under Settings → Email Customization → Customize, turn them off.
Retries. Under Settings → Logistics and Operations → Edit Settings, remove the extra retries. Awtomic requires one, so push it out past the campaign. Day 28 is a good starting point, and we'll advise the right timing when we set you up.

We configure the Churn Buster side with you, including the retry schedule and campaign timing.

What to know

Customers update their card through the link in Churn Buster's recovery emails.
Churn Buster runs one recovery campaign per customer, tied to the subscription that failed.
Message Churn Buster to enable Cancel Flows. Bundle pricing is available, and includes basic setup at no additional cost.

Tracking performance

Your Awtomic dashboard and Churn Buster will show different numbers, and that's expected since we measure things differently. Churn Buster waits for every campaign to resolve and reports recovery on rolling windows of completed campaigns.

FAQ

Do I still need Awtomic's retries, or does Churn Buster run them?

Churn Buster runs them. Awtomic requires one retry, so we push it out past the campaign. Day 28 is a good starting point, and we'll advise the right timing for your account.

Will Churn Buster cancel subscriptions while payments are failing?

No. Churn Buster works the full recovery window first. If every retry fails, Awtomic moves the subscription to Failed status rather than canceling it, which keeps the door open if the customer comes back.

Why do my first few weeks of numbers look low?

Campaigns take weeks to resolve, and Churn Buster counts a campaign only once it completes. Early cohorts read low and settle as full campaign cycles finish.
