Recover failed subscription payments with Churn Buster

Churn Buster is a revenue recovery and retention layer for subscription and membership brands. Connected to Stay AI, it recovers failed subscription payments with automated email campaigns.

Why merchants add Churn Buster to Stay AI

Churn Buster sends a sequence of different messages alongside failed payment attempts, each timed to a stage of the recovery window.
On Stay AI, Churn Buster manages the retry timing and the messaging together, so you can measure and optimize your campaign as one system.
Recovery emails go out on dedicated transactional infrastructure, authenticated with your own domain.

How it works

Stay AI sends Churn Buster its subscription and payment events. When a payment fails, Churn Buster opens a recovery campaign for that customer and manages the retry timing and a timed sequence of emails across the recovery window, so retries and messaging stay coordinated. When a payment succeeds, the campaign closes automatically. If every retry fails, Churn Buster can cancel the subscription at the end of the campaign.

We configure the Churn Buster side with you, and walk you through the Stay AI settings that let one coordinated recovery sequence run: turning off Stay AI's failed payment email, toggling off "Cancel Dunned Subscriptions" so every customer gets the full recovery window, and setting Stay AI's retry values so they line up with the Churn Buster campaign.

What to know

Churn Buster controls the retry timing on Stay AI and runs the recovery messaging on the same schedule. Stay AI's native retries stay enabled so they don't collide, capped at seven attempts.
Recovery emails include a Stay AI payment update link that takes customers to the Stay AI customer portal to add their card.
Churn Buster covers your Stay AI subscriptions.

Tracking performance

Your Stay AI dashboard and Churn Buster will show different numbers, and that's expected since we measure things differently. Stay AI's Recovery by Attempt, for example, groups recoveries by attempt within the period you select, not the rolling windows Churn Buster uses. Churn Buster waits for every campaign to resolve and reports recovery on rolling windows of completed campaigns.

FAQ

A customer updated their card, but the payment didn't go through. Why?

Stay AI charges the updated card on its next scheduled retry, not the moment it's updated. Because Churn Buster controls the retry timing, that wait is shorter than Stay AI's default.

Will Churn Buster cancel subscriptions while payments are failing?

Not mid-campaign. The retries run their full course first, and we turn off Stay AI's "Cancel Dunned Subscriptions" so every customer gets the full window. If every retry fails, Churn Buster can cancel the subscription at the end of the campaign, which we configure with you.

Why turn off Stay AI's failed payment email?

So every customer runs through one coordinated Churn Buster sequence instead of two overlapping sets of emails. We handle the change with you during setup.

Why do my first few weeks of numbers look low?

Campaigns take weeks to resolve, and Churn Buster counts a campaign only once it completes. Early cohorts read low and settle as full campaign cycles finish.
