Recover failed subscription payments with Churn Buster

Churn Buster is a revenue recovery and retention layer for subscription and membership brands. Connected to Loop, it recovers failed subscription payments with automated email campaigns, and can run branded cancel flows that present save offers when a customer goes to cancel.

Why merchants add Churn Buster to Loop
  • Messaging runs independently from the payment retries, so you can measure and optimize your campaign on its own.
  • Recovery emails go out on dedicated transactional infrastructure, authenticated with your own domain.

How it works

Loop sends Churn Buster its subscription events. When a payment fails, Churn Buster opens a recovery campaign for that customer and sends a timed sequence of emails (and optional SMS) alongside Loop's retry attempts. When a payment succeeds, the campaign closes automatically. When Loop's retries run out, Churn Buster closes the campaign.

Get set up

For the best experience, schedule a kickoff call and we'll get you set up right.

When you set up your own account, you'll follow the instructions to connect Loop during setup, including generating a Loop API token. To reconnect later or switch accounts, use the Loop connection page.

Then adjust two things in Loop:

  • Retry schedule. Under Retain → Payment Recovery, set 12 attempts. Loop spaces each attempt a number of days after the one before it, so enter 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4 (about 28 days).
  • Failure notifications. Under Settings → Notifications, turn off Payment failed with retries left, Last payment retry left, and Payment failed, so customers get one coordinated campaign. Style your Customer Portal Link Email here too — that's the email Churn Buster's capture page sends when a customer goes to update their card.

We configure the Churn Buster side with you — campaign timing and SMS if you use it.

Set up your sending domain

Recovery emails land best when they come from your own brand. Authenticate your sending domain in Churn Buster at Settings → Sending Domains — a few minutes of setup that protects your inbox placement.

What to know

  • Churn Buster covers your Loop subscriptions, including customers with more than one.
  • You can add Cancel Flows for an incremental fee, with basic setup included at no additional cost. Message us to turn it on.

Tracking performance

Your Loop dashboard and Churn Buster will show different numbers, and that's expected since we measure differently. Churn Buster waits for every campaign to resolve and reports recovery on rolling windows of completed campaigns, so a side-by-side read against Loop's live view won't line up. We'll walk you through how to read both any time.

A note on Loop's Skip Order setting

If your end-of-retries behavior is set to Skip Order, a failed payment carries from one order to the next instead of closing the subscription. Churn Buster campaigns can then repeat for the same non-responsive customer, which drags your recovery rate down. We recommend closing subscriptions rather than running them indefinitely — either cancel automatically once Loop's retries run out, or manually after a few failed cycles.

Common questions

Do I still need Loop's retries, or does Churn Buster run them? Loop runs the retries on the schedule you set under Retain → Payment Recovery. Churn Buster times its email sequence to that window, so the retries and the messaging work together.

Why turn off Loop's failed payment emails? So each customer gets one coordinated recovery sequence instead of two overlapping sets of emails. Churn Buster's campaign takes the place of those three Loop notifications.

Will Churn Buster cancel my subscriptions? No. When Loop's retries run out, Churn Buster closes its campaign, and what happens to the subscription follows the end-of-retries setting you picked in Loop — skip order, cancel, or pause.

My Loop recovery rate or churn looks worse since we switched. Did Churn Buster cause that? Very unlikely. In the first few weeks the difference is usually in how Loop counts things, not a change in churn itself. A recovery campaign runs 25 to 30 days or more, and while it's still running Loop can mark that customer as cancelled and leave them out of its recovery rate, so the number reads low until the campaigns finish. Give them a full cycle and we'll reconcile the two views with you.
