Recover failed subscription payments with Churn Buster
Churn Buster is a revenue recovery and retention layer for subscription and membership brands. Connected to Recharge, it recovers failed subscription payments with automated email campaigns, and can run branded cancel flows that present save offers when a customer goes to cancel.
- A team continuously tunes your recovery, from retry timing to campaign copy to segmentation, so it keeps improving on your account.
- You can see what's working and what's still recoverable, measured against your own baseline.
- Recovery emails go out on dedicated transactional infrastructure, authenticated with your own domain.
How it works
Recharge sends Churn Buster its subscription and payment events. When a payment fails, Churn Buster opens a recovery campaign for that customer and runs an adaptive sequence of payment retries and emails (and optional SMS) across the recovery window, with retry timing tuned to the decline reason. A short delay sits at the front of the schedule so a retry can clear on its own before any email goes out. When a payment succeeds, the campaign closes automatically.
Get set up
Contact us and we'll create your Churn Buster account. For the best experience, schedule a kickoff call and we'll make sure you get off to a great start. Or email support@churnbuster.io.
After accepting the invitation to your new account, connect to Recharge here.
Then adjust two things in Recharge:
- Retry schedule. In your Recharge retry settings, set 3 retries, 8 days apart, and choose 3rd party.
- Native failure notifications. Turn off Recharge's Card Declined email so customers get one coordinated campaign instead of two overlapping sets of messages. If you use Recharge SMS, turn off the Failed Charge messages too.
We configure the Churn Buster side with you.
Recovery emails land best when they come from your own brand. Authenticate your sending domain in Churn Buster at Settings → Sending Domains, a few minutes of setup that protects your inbox placement.
What to know
- Customers update their card on Churn Buster's Recharge Capture page, which routes each customer to the right place to update, often with no login. Shop Pay customers get a Shopify email to update; everyone else gets tokenized access to their portal. The new card attaches to the subscription automatically.
- Churn Buster covers your Recharge subscriptions, including customers with more than one.
- Running more than one Recharge or Shopify store? Each store connects to its own Churn Buster account, priced on that store's monthly recurring revenue, and you can tailor each one with translated emails or regional timing. Use a separate login email for each account.
- Message Churn Buster to enable Cancel Flows. Bundle pricing is available, and includes basic setup at no additional cost.
Tracking performance
Your Recharge dashboard and Churn Buster will show different numbers, and that's expected since we measure things differently. Recharge groups charges into monthly cohorts, so its recovery rate reads low while retries are still pending on recent failures. Churn Buster waits for every campaign to resolve and reports recovery on rolling windows of completed campaigns, and the rate settles in about 90 days depending on your payment volume.
FAQ
Do I still need Recharge's retries, or does Churn Buster run them?
Churn Buster runs them. Its adaptive campaign handles the retry timing along with the emails, tuned to your account. The 3-retry setting you leave on in Recharge is a fallback that catches a customer's other subscriptions if several fail at once.
A customer has more than one subscription. How does Churn Buster handle that?
Churn Buster opens one campaign for the customer and keeps it open until they have no active Recharge subscriptions left. It retries the subscription that started the campaign, and Recharge's retries catch the others, which is why the 3-retry setting matters.
What happens to a campaign if a customer skips an order or moves their next charge date?
The campaign stops right away, since the charge that opened it no longer applies. If the next scheduled charge fails, a fresh campaign opens then.
Will Churn Buster cancel my subscriptions?
What happens at the end depends on the setting you choose. Recharge cancels a subscription once it reaches max retries, and Churn Buster can cancel at the end of a campaign instead. We set that with you.
Why do my first few weeks of numbers look low?
Campaigns take weeks to resolve, and Churn Buster counts a campaign only once it completes. Early cohorts read low and settle as full campaign cycles finish.
